Unveiling the new FastGig 2.0 App!

Are you a college student trying to figure out how to supplement your income without skipping classes? You're not alone; many students look for flexible part-time work to help pay their tuition fees or earn extra for their wants in life.

In today's world, students often juggle academic responsibilities while seeking opportunities to earn a side income. The demand for flexible part-time jobs has surged, enabling students to strike a balance between their studies and financial needs. Tutoring is one of the most popular flexible part-time options but it requires prior skills and experience for tutors to establish themselves. FastGig explores flexible part-time jobs with no commitment, no prior experience or skills needed, and a fast booking process for students to start earning a stable flexible income.

In this article, we'll explore the top five flexible part-time jobs on FastGig that are popular with students due to their benefits and flexibility:

  1. Service Crew:

The Service Crew role is one of the most popular roles when it comes to students. The constant high demand, low barriers of entry, and shallow learning curve make it a convenient choice for many. This role is a great opportunity for students to pick up soft skills like communication, customer service, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Most F&B establishments are open early and closed late at night, allowing them to create multiple shifts out of the standard school hours. This enables students to apply for shifts that fit their school schedule.

Apart from Service Crew, students interested in the F&B industry can explore other roles like dishwashing, cashier, assistant cook, and bartending.

  1. Retail Assistant:

What makes Retail businesses interesting is the chance to venture into diverse markets, ranging from fashion, furniture to entertainment and more. This allows students to explore a business that fits their interests.

It is fulfilling to work in the retail sector  for many who are keen to shape a customer’s experience when stepping into a store. A positive service experience can create an unforgettable memory for many that can create a positive outlook that ripples from the individual to the business, and potentially on the overall perception of a country for tourists.

When it comes to a retail career, one may expect the following job responsibilities in a summary:

  • Assist in customer enquiry and provide product/service recommendations.
  • Maintain a clean and organised store environment.
  • Handle cashier responsibilities, including processing transactions accurately.
  • Restock shelves and merchandise, ensuring product availability.

Similar to F&B businesses, a retail job can accommodate class schedules and exam periods as it provides shifts after school and on weekends. Students receive on-the-job training to learn about customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  1. Delivery Driver or Courier:

For students who have access to a vehicle or a bicycle, working as a delivery driver or courier provides a flexible part-time employment with weekly income. One of the primary draws of becoming a delivery driver is the flexibility and control over your time. There are differences when it comes to a delivery driver role where the compensation can either be based on a flat rate or a per delivery commission or a combination of both.

Apart from the flexibility, a delivery role isolates job seekers from the need to be front-facing as compared to a customer service or retail role. Some individuals work better in such an environment and a delivery job provides just that.

  1. Event Sales Promoters:

The most exciting component about event positions is the possibility to be a part of the event's mood and grandeur. Participating in events provides an excellent chance to establish new connections that may lead to future opportunities. These connections also serve as a valuable avenue for listening and learning from others.
The role usually involves the following:

- Promote and drive sales for a product or service
- Demonstrate featured products
- Assist in setting up and organising promotional display

Event sales promoters are in demand, especially during the festive season - Christmas, Chinese New Year, or special events such as Singapore Formula One. The events also usually pay a premium hourly rate to attract as many candidates as possible with some offering above $20 per hour.

Besides the sales aspect of this role, students can gain practical skills in marketing, event planning, and customer service—valuable experiences that can be applied effectively.

  1. Warehouse Assistant:

Similar to the delivery role, a warehouse role usually isolates the worker from the need to face customers and clients. This role is usually very straightforward and involves the following responsibilities:

- Packing products into boxes
- Organising boxes and products according to client needs
- Manage inventory and stock take

One thing to note, most warehouse roles require the need to lift heavy loads with and without the assistance of others. It is wise to ensure that you’re physically fit for the role to minimise the possibility of injuries. This role is high in demand especially when there are events or e-commerce sales that require more hands to pack and organise orders.

Conclusion

In the quest for a side income, students now can tap on a platform such as the FastGig App to explore more job opportunities. The best thing is the weekly payout that gives you access to your earnings faster than a traditional part-time job that pays monthly.

The added advantage of weekly pay ensures a steady income stream, offering students financial stability alongside their academic pursuits. As the gig economy continues to thrive, students can explore these flexible part-time jobs to strike a harmonious balance between education and earning.

How to Hire Casual Part-Time Workers for F&B Businesses

In recent years, the gig economy has seen remarkable transformations, affecting not only the global workforce but also the landscape of businesses in Singapore. The Food and Beverage (F&B) industry, in particular, has witnessed significant changes as it adapts to the evolving demands of the market. In this article, we will delve into the dynamics of hiring casual part-time workers for F&B businesses in Singapore, explore the impact of the gig economy, and discuss how COVID-19 has accelerated the need for flexible workforce solutions.

The Gig Economy Evolution & Impact on F&B Industry

The gig economy, characterised by temporary, flexible work arrangements, has experienced a rapid evolution in Singapore. Since its inception, it has diversified considerably, moving well beyond its initial focus on delivery and transportation to encompass a wide range of industries and job categories. This transformation has been powered by multiple factors, including technological advancements, evolving labour market dynamics, and shifts in worker preferences. The main motivators that drive individuals toward these work arrangements are the allure of flexibility and freedom, as highlighted in the Ministry of Manpower's 2020 Labour Force in Singapore 2020 report.

In Singapore, the gig economy has gained prominence in the F&B industry due to the fluctuating nature of this sector's demand and the need for businesses to remain agile in their operations. The ability to hire casual part-time workers when needed provides these businesses with the flexibility to scale up or down to better manage market demand and supply, thereby reducing operational costs when necessary.

COVID-19 and the Gig Economy

The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for change in the F&B industry. With lockdowns, restrictions, and unpredictable consumer behaviour, F&B businesses faced the challenge of managing their workforce effectively. Flexible work arrangements such as offering flexible hours to accommodate employees' needs during the pandemic were very much needed, especially during this global crisis. As such, casual part-time workers became an integral part of their workforce strategy, helping them navigate the uncertain times with ease. This made companies more agile and adaptable to the ever-changing external circumstances.

The Progressive Wage Model

According to Singapore Department of Statistics (Singstat), approximately 15,400 workers exited the F&B services sector in 2020. Given the industry's struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector experienced a modest net gain of just 600 employees in 2021.

Singapore has been proactive in addressing labour-related concerns in the F&B sector. The Progressive Wage Model (PWM) is one such initiative that aims to uplift the wages and skills of low-wage workers in various industries, including the F&B sector (from 1 March 2023). This model sets out structured wage increments and requirements for training, incentivising F&B businesses to invest in their employees. As per the progressive wage model, part-time food services workers are required to receive a minimum hourly gross wage of S$9.18. The PWM is expected to benefit approximately 41,000 resident food service workers, including both full-time and part-time employees. Hiring casual part-time workers under this model ensures that they receive fair compensation and opportunities for growth, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and retention.

Benefits of Hiring Casual Part-Time Workers in F&B

Hiring casual part-time workers in the F&B industry offers an array of benefits for businesses, some of which includes:

  1. Flexibility in staffing:
Casual workers can be hired on-demand, allowing F&B businesses to efficiently manage peak hours, events, and seasonal fluctuations.

  2. Cost Efficiency:
By reducing the reliance on full-time workforce, F&B establishments can significantly lower their labour expenses. Gig workers are only compensated upon completion of a deployment which reduces unnecessary costs. This cost efficiency allows them to allocate resources more effectively, reinvesting in other areas of their business, such as improving menu offerings or customer service.

  3. Diverse Skill Sets:
F&B businesses can tap into a diverse pool of talent with different skill sets and experiences, enhancing the overall capabilities of the workforce. With the flexibility of choosing their gig roles, these casual workers are equipped with a myriad of different skills and experience in different jobs. For instance, a worker may have expertise in both waiting tables, familiarity with multiple POS systems, and providing assistance in the kitchen; making them a valuable resource for your restaurant.

  4. Adaptability:
Adapting to changing market conditions is easier when you have a flexible workforce that can quickly respond to shifts in market demands. Recurring gig workers that are familiar with your brand can also be repurposed to perform other roles if required by your company.

  5. Reduced Administrative Burden:
Hiring through a temp staff agency or fully managed model takes away the administrative burden of recruitment, onboarding, and payroll, allowing F&B businesses to focus on their core operations.

Roles for Casual Part-Time Workers in F&B

Casual part-time workers play a crucial role in the smooth functioning of F&B establishments, often covering positions that are essential in the day to day operations. They represent the front-line of your establishment and are responsible for providing an exceptional customer experience. With the increase need of manpower, especially during festive seasons, here are some of the key roles they can fulfil:

  1. Service Crew:
Hire service crew to assist in serving customers, taking orders, and ensuring a smooth dining experience. Similar roles include waiter, waitress, restaurant busser, and floor staff.

  2. Kitchen Assistant:
Casual part-time workers can help in food preparation, cooking, and maintaining kitchen hygiene. This includes similar roles like commis chef and kitchen helper.

  3. Cashiers:
Employers can hire cashiers to assist in the handling of cash transactions and managing point-of-sale systems efficiently.

  4. Dishwashers:
Often behind the scenes, dishwashers play a critical role in maintaining a well-organised and sanitary kitchen. Hiring casual workers to fill the role can help support the overall operations process.

  5. Event Staff:
For catering and special events, casual workers can be hired to ensure events run smoothly. This can include a multitude of different roles like Ushers, Event Helper, and Brand Ambassadors.

Being a student is stressful as it is with consistent deadlines, projects, and catching up with your studies. However, not all of us have the luxury to afford school without the burden of financial worries. Whether it is to provide for the family, to supplement your daily expenses, to pay bills, or to pay tuition fees, many students are turning to part-time work whilst studying.

Data taken from the report on Labour Force In Singapore 2022 mentioned that there has been a decrease in students taking up part-time jobs by 2.7% from 2021 due to the opening of physical classes post-COVID. The lack the flexibility is mentioned as one of the main points contributing to this drop.

In this article, we'll explore how students manage the intricate dance of academics, part-time jobs, and personal pursuits, shedding light on the keys to a harmonious and fulfilling lifestyle.

1. Striking the Right Balance:

A harmonious balance between academic commitments and part-time work is achieved by creating a realistic schedule that allocates time for studying and working. This ensures neither aspect overshadows the other, fostering a sense of equilibrium. This can be better managed with flexible roles and options that allows the student to have full control over their schedules.

2. Understanding the Role of Part-Time Jobs:

Part-time jobs not only provide financial support but also serve as valuable learning experiences. Taking up a part-time position that aligns with your interests or learning objectives can foster a passion for your work, leading to a more rewarding and stress-free schedule.

3. Explore Freelance or Flexible Job Options:

Freelancing provides students with the flexibility to choose projects that align with their skills, interests, and schedule. This opens up the possibility of taking on shifts on school days as well.
Most flexible job options do not have a minimum commitment period or a contract. This allows students to manage their time better without having to sacrifice other aspects of their lives.

To name a few, here are some flexible work roles that are popular with students:

1) Service Crew
2) Retail Assistant
3) Event Promoter
4) E-Commerce Packer
5) Grocery Picker

These roles do not require prior experience and with a shallow learning curve, it makes them a common choice for students looking to earn a stable weekly income.

4. Take Time to Rest & Relax:

Amidst the demands of school and work, you must set aside time for relaxation and self-care. Setting boundaries and recognising the importance of downtime contribute to a healthier work-life balance. Whether it's pursuing hobbies, spending time with friends, or simply unwinding, these moments are crucial for your well-being.

Conclusion

The journey of juggling school, work, and personal time is a challenging yet rewarding one for students. Achieving a harmonious work-life balance involves strategic planning, prioritisation, and choosing opportunities that align with private interests.

Part-time jobs, holiday employment, and freelancing can complement academic pursuits, providing valuable experiences and financial support. Ultimately, striking the right balance ensures that students not only succeed academically and professionally but also nurture their well-being and personal growth along the way.
